Letter writing and Essay writing tips for SBI PO Main Exam

The State Bank of India (SBI) is the largest bank of India and has the most number of branches spread out through the country. It is also regarded as being among the top banks of India in matters of employee compensation. Other than their substantial compensation, the employees of this bank also enjoy quite a lot of other perks and benefits.

It goes without saying that as the biggest bank of the country, SBI has to entertain a lot of job applications. The bank conducts a test before recruitment to filter through candidates. The test contains three levels. The first level is the preliminary level, the second level is the mains level and the third level consists of group discussion (GD) and personal interview (PI). In the second level of this exam the candidates have to complete two tasks. They have to answer an objective multiple choice question paper and also do some subjective writing in English. Candidates who clear these two levels successfully, are then subjected to the group discussion and personal interview.

It is necessary to score good marks in the descriptive section of the paper if candidates want to be assured of clearing the test. The candidates may have to write a brief essay as one of the questions of the descriptive paper. As the descriptive section has a total of 50 marks it is necessary for students to score high in order to improve their chances of getting through.

Not many students are confident about the essay questions because of two reasons. First they have to write the essay online and so have to use a keyboard. The second reason is that the essay has to be written in the English language and majority of the test givers aren’t very comfortable with it. Candidates should practice typing on a keyboard before writing the essay as they have to write the essay by typing in the examination.

Candidates may additionally have to write letters too. The letters can be both formal and informal. Formal letters are official letters and are generally written to officials. The tone of a formal letter should be kept polite and extra emphasis should be paid on getting the format right. A letter should always have the following things like address, date, salutations and acknowledgement. Informal letters are generally written for the purpose of communicating with family members and friends. The format of both these kind of letters differ considerably and the candidates should learn them by heart. It is also important not to exceed the word limit specified. The candidates should make sure that they get the necessary information across while staying inside the word limit.

Candidates should select the topic they are most comfortable with while writing an essay. Instead of choosing an attractive fancy topic candidates should opt for one that allows them to showcase their writing abilities to their perfection. Make a list of the important points that you want to include in your essay. The essay should be broken down into paragraphs to make it more attractive. Start each paragraph with a different theme. The content of the paragraphs should be distinct and separate. The last paragraph should be devoted to the conclusion of the essay.

The first that is noticed about the essay is its opening line or title. Candidates should take special care to make the starting line resonate with the readers. This will help them create a good impression in the eyes of the examiner.

Use simple, easy words and maintain the flow of the essay. Big words, phrases or metaphors shouldn’t be unnecessarily put into the text as they can create an obstacle between the writer and the reader. Special attention also must be paid to the conclusion part of the essay and it should be consistent with the rest of the material.
