Scheme for Agro-Marine Produce Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters (SAMPADA)

The Union Ministry of Food Processing has been planning to launch Scheme for Agro-Marine Produce Processing & Development of Agro-Processing Clusters (SAMPADA) for country’s food processing sector.

The scheme will boost nation’s food processing sector, by integrating existing and new schemes focused on doubling income of farmers and reducing the food wastage by the end of year 2022. The scheme will also help create a strong infrastructure for linking entire food supply chain of the nation.

SAMPADA: Key Facts

  1. SAMPADA is a main scheme which will have ongoing sub schemes such as cold chain projects, mega food parks and other creative and new schemes.
  2. The ministry has proposed a budget of Rs. 6000 crore for the scheme, which will be implemented by 2019-2020.
  3. Three new schemes will also be launched by the ministry for creating infrastructure to improve the country’s entire food supply chain. The three schemes to be launched by ministry are: “Backward and Forward Linkages”, “New Agro-Processing Clusters”, and “Creation/ Expansion of Food Processing & Preservation Capacities”,

The government is also taking steps for boosting India’s food processing sector in order to reduce post-harvest losses, which are estimated at Rs 92,000 crore yearly. It aims to make post-harvest loss minimal or bringing it to zero level, increase the farmers’ income by two fold, and provide high quality food to consumers at less price.

The ministry will launch the scheme with an aim to map agriculture hubs, food clusters, and infrastructure facilities in the country from labs to cold chains. Under the SAMPADA scheme, ministry will provide a subsidy grant of up to Rs 10 crore or a 35% subsidy, whichever is lower, for creating infrastructure at these clusters in order to maintain food products’ seamless transfer from producing to consuming, so that these centres becomes a reality in India.
